Music can best be defined as the sound that is pleasing to the ear, Sumita's slender fingers bring out the best of notes from the strings of sitar and give a mesmerizing effect to the listeners. This has been possible through the sustained and sincere (Sadhna) dedication of Dr. Sumita Chakravorty.
Environment and upbringing go a long way in making a musician. Born into a Bengali family of music lovers, she received musical guidance initially from her mother, Late Smt. Shakti Mukherice and Late Shri C.N. Banerjee.
She added luster to her art under worthy and dedicated Gurus of the caliber of Dr. Sharmistha Ghosh. Smt. Savita Maharaj, Late Shri Goswami Radhakrishnan, and became a disciple of Pt. Padmabhushan Debu completing her doctoral thesis under his guidance. She topped in MA. & M. Phil and was awarded a Doctorate (Ph.D.) from Delhi University in 2000 for her thesis - "Role of Instrumental Music in Popularizing Hindustani Classical Music" - a critical study.
